Our Heroes and Heroines, Our Pride – Statement of the Oromo Community of Ireland

The following is a statement from the Oromo Community of Ireland.

The Oromo Community of Ireland celebrated the 2013 Oromo Patriots’ Day by renewing their commitments and promises to the fight against Abyssinian colonization. Members of the community, their children and supporters came together last Sunday on the 14th of April 2013 to proudly remember and praise the Oromo patriots who selflessly dedicated their lives and their families, and sacrificed their lives for their people. The speakers and members remembered and praised the brave Oromo nationals who fought the enemy, who lost their livelihood, and who opposed the tyranny against their people – and faced death-, life- and long-sentences in the enemy’s notorious prisons set up for such purposes.

The members of the Oromo Community of Ireland stressed that they did not have the hearts and minds to forget the lives of the Oromo patriots who had fallen in Ethiopian prisons, and who died fighting against the occupiers. We remember them with the highest possible respect, dignity and praises. Nothing in our lives can be greater than respecting their mission and carrying their emblem until the success of their dream and wish for their people comes to fruition. We condemn those individuals and groups who went against the will of our people, against the history of the great Oromo nation. We condemn those who praise such turncoats as they were the hands of our enemy. Equally, we condemn groups whose plan is against what our heroes and heroines had fallen for, but are trying to make use of our patriots for their wrong and evil purposes.

We understand and accept that the Oromo nation is colonized more than a century ago, as our history and the lives of our people indicate. Thus, we believe that the only way out of slavery is fighting the colonizers, not negotiating with them to stay under them. It is understood that no single nation dare to stay under slavery, and this is can not be special to the Oromo people. Our past history shows that there were Oromo individuals and groups who fail to understand or wrongly understand the history and the lives of our people, and try to distort, and weaken the Oromo quest for justice and freedom. These groups only bandage the sore lives of our people and never can be the cure for the history of colonization and slavery on our people.

The scar of slavery and colonization can only be cured by freedom, not by any other. History can only be made, not defined. Thus, we cannot redefine our history to fit our purpose. Rather, we need to make another history that corrects a wrongly done one. A clear definition of colonization and what has happened to our people in the past tell us that we, Oromos, were colonized and are still in the colony of the Abyssinian force. Today, this is no better or different. We cannot deny or rewrite this fact of the past and the present. Today, only few Oromos, who have not come across the history or who have a poor understanding of history, mix the histories of Oromo and Ethiopia. The slaves who built the Egyptian pyramid were not Egyptians, nor are Oromos, who build Ethiopia, be taken as Ethiopians.

We, the Oromo Community of Ireland, therefore, stand by those groups and individuals who speak and act according to our history, and deeply condemn and stand against those who speak and act in accordance with the plans of our enemy. We never forget our beloved and respected heroes and heroines. We continue to teach our children to know and to be proud of them. We reinstate our promise to their plan until it is accomplished. Our praises, appreciations and respect go to our heroes and heroines who lost their lives for their people; to those braves in Oromian forests, mountains and valleys fighting the enemy; to those who are languishing in Ethiopian prisons; to those who had fled their home country and are suffering in foreign countries; and to those who had lost their loved ones in the fight for the Oromo people.

The Oromo community of Ireland appreciates and praises all members of the Oromo communities around the world who are celebrating our real heroes and heroines. Together, we can change our dark history – the history that rocked our integrity, our humanity and the fabrics our nationhood. Our promise – we never negotiate with the colonizers to live with until we defeat them.

OSA’s Appeal Letter to the Secretary General of the UN on Land-Grabbing in Oromia

Your Excellency Ki-moon:

I am writing on behalf of the Oromo Studies Association (OSA), a scholarly organization established by Oromo and non-Oromo scholars to promote studies on and relevant to the Oromo people. We are gravely concerned that the Tigrayan-led minority Ethiopian government continues forcefully evicting Oromo farmers and other indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands and leasing them to national and transnational investors without their consent and with little or no compensation. Hundreds of thousands of Oromo farmers and other indigenous communities continue losing their farming and grazing lands they have owned for centuries and thrown out on the streets exposing their families and extended families to humiliation, starvation and death. In many instances family heads are given a 30 day notice to evacuate from their land. Those who refused to comply with the short notice faced intimidation, beatings, arrests, and in some cases death.

The Oromo people are the single largest ethno/national group in the Ethiopian empire and in the Horn of Africa constituting more than 40% of the Ethiopian population. Oromia, homeland of the Oromos in Ethiopia, covers a large geographical area. By all accounts, Oromia is the single richest region in the Empire with abundant fertile land, livestock products, coffee, oil seeds, mineral resources, and a diverse wild life. Compared with other regions of the empire, Oromia gets relatively high rainfall and a relatively large proportion of its surface is covered with forest. The current government in Ethiopia is controlled by the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a group originating from the Tigrai regional state in the north. Contrary to Oromia, the Tigrai regional state is characterized by barren land with meagre natural resources and the Tigrayan population constitute only about 6% of the Ethiopian population. The Tigrayan-led minority government is therefore practicing a discriminatory and destructive land-grab policy as a way of exploiting the abundant wealth and natural resources of the Oromo and other communities by forcefully evicting families from their lands and signing land-lease contracts with Tigrayan and foreign investors.

Despite the fact that Tigrai is the poorest region in the empire, many Tigrayan business men and women have turned themselves into rich investors building their personal business empire over the last 21 years of the TPLF rule. The current destructive land-grab policy of the regime is a continuation of the amassing of personal wealth of the members of the ruling elite at the cost of destroying the livelihood of the families of indigenous communities such as the Oromo. It has nothing to do with investment or development as the government tries to mislead the international community. This land-grab policy is harmful and wrong in many ways including that:

a. It displaces, marginalizes and exposes vulnerable peasants to inescapable suffering and death;

b. It exacerbates food insecurity, ethnic conflict and mass starvation;

c. It is discriminatory as it applies only to the Southern regions of Ethiopia, such as Oromia, Gambella, and Benishangul;

d. The Ethiopian government that makes and implements such policy decisions and signs land lease contracts on behalf of the peoples of the Southern Ethiopia comes entirely from the Tigrayan ethnic group of the North.

OSA members and the millions of Oromo farmers and others are deeply concerned by this reckless policy because of its obvious discriminatory implications that fuel conflict among various ethno-national groups. I am writing to request that the UN involve in stopping the illegal seizure of lands of indigenous peoples by implementing the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The historical impacts of land-grab in Ethiopia were characterized by brutal conflicts, cultural extinction, and even genocide through mass killings. The war of occupation and land-grab in the last decades of the nineteenth century resulted in the death of about five million (50%) people in Southern Ethiopia. The current problems associated with land-grab are especially complex in Southern Ethiopia; the local people are not represented in the government of Ethiopia that is dominated and led by Tigrayans. Mistrust between Tigreans who come from the north and the Southern peoples of Ethiopia is rampant, shaped by a bitter history of war, occupation, cultural domination, and inherited hostility. The non-Tigrayan population of Ethiopia see the decision of the Tigrayan government of Ethiopia as a deliberate and conniving move to dismantle the cultural fiber of the South and expand Tigrayan cultural and economic domination. Land-grab is indeed perceived among the Southern Ethiopian population as a hostile trap targeting their most sacred property, their land.

Since 1996, the total area of agricultural land transferred to the investors is 4 million hectares. A total land transferred to investors will be 7 million hectares of agricultural land by the end of 2015. Over 94% of the land assigned to Tigrayan and foreign investors is located in Southern Ethiopia i.e., the non-Tigrayan and non-Amhara regions. To seal the deal, the Ethiopia regime offers protection to investors by being a member of the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agencies that the agreements guarantee investors’ right without providing opportunities for those affected by activities of investment projects to challenge the agreements and to call for adequate compensation. For example the agreement signed with the Netherlands on the encouragement and reciprocal protection of investment offers considerable incentives to the private corporations wishing to invest in Ethiopia: i.e., it guarantees transfers of profits, interests, or dividends in freely convertible currency of payments related to investments, that a Dutch company investing in Ethiopia would not have to pay tax and that profits can flow back to the Netherlands without any restrictions.

Your Excellency:

We know of no government policy in the world, where the majority of the citizens are subjected to different set of rules based on ethnic identity; this government imposes these preferential rules firmly to protect the interests of Tigrayan and foreign investors more than the people of the country it allegedly represents. Consequently, the Tigrayan-dominated regime of Ethiopia has forfeited its representation of the Oromo people; the agreements it enters on behalf of the Oromo people shall not be binding. In the meantime, we kindly and respectfully appeal to the United Nations and the international communities to:

1. Demand that the Ethiopian government stop its land-grab and distribution policies with no delay;

2. Impose their good offices on the Ethiopian government so that the government compensates all the victims of the land-grab;

3. Demand that the Ethiopian government recognizes the indigenous people’s ownership of their ancestral land;

4. Discourage foreign investors from continuing to lease lands from the Ethiopian government because the lands that are leased are given to them by displacing the native people;

5. Actively engage in the establishment of independent commissions of justice both at regional and global levels to investigate these criminal acts of forceful land-grabs that threaten the existence of indigenous peoples in Ethiopia in order to enable victims of land-grabbing to be able to access fair justice.

U.S. State Department slams Ethiopia on human rights – OPride.com

(OPride) — The U.S. government on Friday commended activists, netizens, and journalists for their courage in advocating for universal human rights and expressed concern over the heightened crackdown on civil liberties, rebuking several countries for shrinking the space for journalists and activists.

In its 36th annual report of human rights practices around the world, the State Department criticized the increased suppression of freedoms of expression, assembly, association and religion. The report said governments continued to repress or attack the means by which individuals organize and “demand better performance from their rulers” by instituting new impending laws throughout 2012.

The State Department report singled out Ethiopia for its use of “counter terrorism or extremism as a pretext for suppressing freedom of expression.” It added the ruling party, EPRDF, used anti-terrorism legislation to prosecute journalists, opposition members, and activists.

April 15th is Guyyaa Gootota Oromoo (GGO). This commemorative day was first started by the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) after the executions of its prominent leaders on a diplomatic mission en routed to Somalia on April 15, 1980. Since then, this day has been observed as the Oromo Martyrs’ Day by Oromo nationals around the world to honor those who have sacrificed their lives to free Oromia, and to renew a commitment to the cause for which they had died.

There are four major reasons why we commemorate this day
First, this day allows us to remember those Oromo heroines and heroes who sacrificed their lives to restore Oromo culture, identity, and human dignity that were wounded by Ethiopian colonialism. In other words, this commemoration assists us to recognize the dialectical connection between martyrdom, bravery, patriotism and Oromummaa. Until Oromo heroes and heroines created the OLF and maintained its survival by paying ultimate sacrifices, Oromo peoplehood, culture, language, and history were dumped into the trashcan of Ethiopian history. These heroes and heroines had clearly understood the significance of Oromo culture, history, language, and identity in building Oromummaa, and victorious consciousness to consolidate the Oromo national struggle for achieving Oromian statehood, sovereignty, and democracy.

Second, this commemoration day reminds us that Oromo liberation requires heavy sacrifices, and those who have given their lives for our freedom, are our revolutionary models. Such patriots created dignified history for our nation.

Third, this day reminds us that we have historical obligations to continue the struggle that Oromo martyrs started until victory.

Fourth, this celebration helps us recognize that Oromo heroes and heroines are still fighting in Oromia today. Overall, those Oromo patriots, who by luck have survived and continued the difficult and complex struggle, deserve recognition and respect for what they have done for their people. We must protect them from lies and propaganda of the internal and external enemies. Without the persistent efforts of our patriots, the multiple enemies of the Oromo nation would have destroyed the OLF a long time ago.

The map on the right side herein shows the approximate location of the UNESCO-registered Yayu* Coffee Forest Biosphere Reserve, which is found in the Iluu Abbaa Booraa region in Oromia. The Yayu forest is one of the last remaining rainforest systems in Oromia in particular, and the Horn of Africa in general. The Yayu forest is the center of the origin for the most popular coffee in the world, coffee arabica, which has been growing wildly in the Yayu and adjacent forests for centuries.

Due to its ecological signification, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) selected the Yayu forest system as one of its 610 biosphere reserves in the world in June 2010 together with the Kafa forest system, which is located adjacent to Yayu, and from which the name “coffee” is said to have come from.

Today in Yayu, instead of conservation and sustainable development activities, what have dotted the landscapes of this UNESCO-registered forest system are bulldozers to make way for a “fertilizer” factory in the middle of the ecological reserve. The regime of TPLF, which has been militarily occupying Oromia since 1991, says it is building the factory in Yayu since the area has some reserves of coal, from which the fertilizer is to be manufactured.

Over the last 21 years, TPLF (the neo-Neftegna group in power) has used “development” and “investment” as reasons for grabbing land in Oromia. In this propaganda video made by TPLF, it boasts of grabbing farmland from Oromo farmers and bulldozing inside the UNESCO-registered biosphere reserve to “construct,” what it calls, a fertilizer factory, which will result in severe environmental consequences to one of the last remaining montane rainforests in Oromia and the Horn of Africa.

Review of Prof. Mekuria Bulcha’s Book: “Contours of the Emergent & Ancient Oromo Nation: Dillemmas in the Ethiopian Politics of State and Nation-Building”

The book is an astonishingly refreshing work that treats the problems of the Oromo people vis-à-vis the Abyssinians (Ethiopians). It is of tremendous significance both for the summing up of and the refutation of past historiographical distortions and shedding of new light by its re-interpretation of important historical episodes in the history of the Oromo people. It is a comprehensive treatment of the history, culture, religion and civilization of the Oromo people in general – as a free nation – and the trials and tribulations both during subjugation by Abyssinian forces in particular, and the resistance they put up over the last hundred years, which is still going on under difficult national (Ethiopian) and international conditions.

Bulcha has the knack for putting all these complex multifarious problems and issues in a clear, understandable language for a broad audience. He articulates the struggle of the Oromo people for emancipation from the Abyssinian colonial yoke – with its ups and downs – not in a straight line but proceeding in a zigzag manner, clearly without embellishment, as opposed to those who are trying to do so by making the murky origin of some of the important Oromo liberation organizations idyllic. The author clearly, in an unambiguous language, states the right of the Oromo people to self-determination without any interference from any quarter, be it national or international, with all its consequences.

The author describes exactly word for word what happened to me when I first came to Finfinnee in September 1956 from Western Oromia. An Abyssinian fellow ninth-grader at the General Wingate Secondary School in Addis Ababa – by the name Asresahegn Tessema – I was a small fourteen years-old boy, he being a big eighteen years-old man, said to me, “ichii gemed af Galla ke yet metach”? Although I have forgotten many of the names of later and recent classmates, I still remember that Abyssinian’s name. Since I was shocked to hear such a statement, his name and remarks are indelibly ingrained in my memory.

As a curious young person at early age, I wanted to find out the nature of things as to who I was, where I came from, what was the current condition of being an Oromo in strange surrounding like Addis Ababa. So, I began reading anything of relevance to Oromo – its people, culture, history etc. specially the so called Ethiopian history. Among others, we were indoctrinated with Abyssinian myth and legends passing of as “history” in the class rooms, chiefly over the Abyssinian stock and nothing virtually over the Oromos. So, I began my own journey into Oromo history. Among others, I read Ullendorff, who said that the “Galla” have contributed nothing of value to Ethiopian civilization – past or present. I was deeply offended and became determined, and began to find ways and means of changing this terrible situation by way of preparing on my own small way through reading further – the history of emancipation of different peoples of the world.

These learning processes continued from high school throughout my time at the Haile Selasse I University. Although I had physical sciences background by training and experience, I continued the learning process by actively participating in support of revolutionary movements, specially the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam in 1960s. There are, among others, many episodes and anecdotes to mention, but I still recall Tadesse Tamrat – after obtaining his degree in “Ethiopian” history in 1968, he angrily defended and eulogized Menelik in an arrogant and boastful manner for his “unification” of Ethiopia – when we, of the oppressed Nationalities, accused Menelik of being in the league with European imperialism and colonialism, as a junior partner himself; and that he had participated in the Scramble for Africa by attending the Berlin Congress of 1884. Then and there, I realized that their heroes are our oppressors and enemies, and that we have nothing in common. Let me cite further examples to illustrate my point.

Theodros, considered a hero by most Ethiopianist historiographers, had cursed his fellow countrymen for deserting him in his hours of need in his deadly conflict, in which he was engaged with Oromos. Towards the end of his life, when situation became desperate, he cursed his fellow Abyssinians: “Galla yigzachihu” – it was the worst insult he could ever imagine. By the way, Mekuria Bulcha gives in his book a possible, plausible and credible explanation for the troubles and eventual demise of Theodros and his empire, unlike the Ethiopianist scholars.

I could cite further examples of how their heroes are our enemies and oppressors. I mention in passing how Gebru Tareke – while describing, with a good deal of honesty, the oppression and treatment of Southern tenants at the hands of the neftenya settlers, nevertheless proceeded to and characterized Menelik as an “anti-imperialist” during the Scramble for Africa. For the Abyssinians, he might well have been, but for us, he was an imperialist oppressor with vast land holdings and tens of thousands of slaves, chiefly Oromos.

Even foreign writers on Ethiopia show such bias. I recall an Abyssinian by the name of Hagos Gebre-Yesus saying that M. Perham was a perceptive writer on Ethiopia, although she never visited Ethiopia – several decades ago when I was in Montreal, Canada – to be precise in 1970. At that time, I did not comment because I had not read her book. Now I know why Hagos made such a statement. She extolled the Abyssinian character traits while she denigrated Oromo character traits. Besides, she advocated for the assimilation of the Oromo people by Abyssinia’s superior culture since, according to her, the Oromos are of inferior race and culture, thus not capable of development as people to an independent nationhood. From the points I mentioned above, it is tempting to conclude that, what is good, honorable and decent for the Abyssinians is exact opposite for Oromos and vice-versa.

Bulcha’s epic story about the Oromo civilization on the Shawan plateau leaves Ethiopianist discourse standing on its head. He convincingly argues by mustering multi-disciplinary sources: geographical, anthropological, sociological, historical, legends and myth to make his case soundly. This book will be, I am sure, the standard and comprehensive reference work on the Oromo society for many years to come. It is not only a reference book, but it debunks several centuries of mystification by Ethiopianists about the people living in the Horn of Africa. Mekuria Bulcha’s erudite work is bound to be valued and cherished by the fighting younger generation of Oromians for decades to come. It is logical, coherent, consistent, and systematic.

The final point I have, by way of criticism, is the omission of the photograph of the illustrious, the late Mokonnon Wassanu, who was executed by the Dergue, from among otherwise thoughtful and beautiful photographs of most of the leadership of the Macca Tullamaa Association. The other is a small mistake – may be due to oversight. The Dergue came to being as a committee in April 1974 and assumed governmental political power officially in June 1974.

I urge every genuine Oromo patriot, wherever he or she may be – to read this book: “Contours of the Emergent & Ancient Oromo Nation: Dillemmas in the Ethiopian Politics of State and Nation-Building” by Mekuria Bulcha. (2011).
