The 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Macha-Tulama Association (MTA)

Development Association (MTCDA), USA, Inc., a not-for-profit organization registered in the United States. The Macha-Tulama Association’s 50th Anniversary is set to be celebrated on August 1, 2014, in Washington, DC.

To: All Oromo Community Associations and Concerned Oromo Individuals in the Diaspora

The Board of Directors of MTCDA-USA is writing this memo to inform you about the formation of the 50th Anniversary Organizing Team of the Macha-Tulama Association (MTA) in the United States and to request you to fully cooperate with, and provide your moral and material support to the team for facilitating the planning and celebration of this glorious anniversary. For your information, the MTCDA is a legally registered not-for-profit organization in the United States.

As you know, the Macha and Tulama Association was formed in 1963 and banned in 1967. The government of Haile-Selassie (1930-1974) banned the Association so quickly because the leaders of the Association organized huge mass meetings, at which through fierce oratory, dramas, poems and prayers in Afaan Oromo, which was banned during those days, moved the Oromo into tears of anger against the oppressive Ethiopian system. The leaders of the Association not only united and provided the Oromo with central leadership, but also made them conscious of their unity and their dehumanization as second-class subjects, and inspired them to be agents for their freedom and human dignity. In short, the Macha-Tulama Association planted the tree of Oromo political consciousness. The limited gains the Oromo achieved since the 1970s was the fruit from that tree of political consciousness. The Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front-dominated Ethiopian regime, which is determined to deprive the Oromo of any independent organization, has once again banned the Macha-Tulama Association. As a result, in 2014 the oldest Oromo civic association cannot celebrate its 50th anniversary among our people in Oromia itself.

Those of us who live in freedom beyond the long brutal arms of the Ethiopian state have a sacred mission for celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Macha-Tulama Association. It will give us a wonderful opportunity for informing the international community that the Oromo, who make the single largest national group in the Horn of Africa and the third largest in Africa, are denied their basic human and democratic rights in their own country. What is greater shame for the Ethiopian government, that beats the drum of democracy, than denying the Oromo the right to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their civic organization? Together, let us celebrate a very successful 50th anniversary, expose the brutality of the Ethiopian regime, and lift up the spirit of our people. Now is the time for the Oromo Diaspora to rise to the challenge of organizing a wonderful 50th anniversary that will make our people proud. Those of us in the Diaspora must prove by our practical actions to our people, friends and foes that nobody can stop us from rebuilding our national institutions, including the Macha-Tulama Association. By uniting our energies and resources, we can brighten the future of our people.

It is our moral, intellectual, spiritual, and national obligation not to allow the destruction of our national institutions by our enemies by standing up for the rights of our people and defending them by rekindling the principles of Oromummaa and liberation, for which huge number of our heroines and heroes have sacrificed their precious lives. Supporting the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the MTA, both morally and materially, is one of the practical manifestations of our nationalist commitment for the cause of our nation. If we are committed to stand with our people at the time when they are not allowed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their oldest civic organization in their own country, let us joyously celebrate it in the Diaspora and demonstrate to the Ethiopian regime that they will never be able to kill the spirit of freedom and human dignity that the Macha-Tulama Association planted in the heart, mind and soul of the Oromo nation.

Therefore, the Board of Directors MTCDA earnestly requests you to assist the team so that the celebration will successfully take place on August 1, 2014 in Washington, DC. We will be very grateful to all who will accept the challenge and support us with all kinds of imaginative efforts, such raising funds for the 50th anniversary and making the preparation for the event known as widely as possible. In the spirit of what the Macha-Tulama Association stands for, we urge all Oromo nationals, community associations, civic and religious groups, and political organizations to support the preparation for the 50th anniversary celebration. Together, we will make it a memorable event, which may inspire the renaissance of other Oromo organizations.

The Continued Repressive Strategy of Menelikians, and the Trajectory that Leads to Freedom and Justice of Nations

Background
Merara Gudina (PHD), 2006, explained that the Ethiopian political system has been dominated by three contending perspectives, namely, the nation building (Menelikian) perspective, the national domination perspective and the colonial thesis. He further explained that nation building (Menelikian) perspective, which considers all atrocities committed on the oppressed peoples as holy actions to build a nation, is no longer relevant and dominant in the Ethiopian political arena. However, the Menelikian block recently came with a revised open strategy to reclaim the past tyrannical imperial legacy. Perhaps, in this brief essay, I will explain that the revitalizing actions being undertaken by the counterparts of Menelik II provide both threats and immense opportunity for genuine political engagements.

The Menelikian Effect: Fragility and Disintegration of Political Forces
The experiences of organized political forces since 1960s (from which political organizations and mobilizations had commenced) are explained by notions of political fragility and disintegration. Among other factors that caused such fragility and disintegration among political forces, the Menelikian-masked objective is the chief one. The recent practices of opposition political forces can clearly show this fact. I would like to elaborate this fact using a case study.

In 2008, as an input for my former newspaper – Raji, I had conducted a small survey to understand what really constituted a multinational political organization in Ethiopia. Most of the leaders of the parties that organized along ethnic/national lines responded that “a multinational organization in the Ethiopian context must be the organization that represents the interests of all peoples.” The responses of some of those who claimed to be of the multinational organization was, on the other hand, read as, “a multinational political organization is a group that is not organized along ethnic/national lines, but that which represents the unity of the entire Ethiopia.”

This small survey was conducted during the time the opposition political forces in Ethiopia were discussing a new umbrella organizational framework called Medrek. Though the finding of the small survey (that was published on Raji newspaper) showed that the parties in Medrek were pursuing most divergent political objectives, they established the new umbrella organization without giving focus for such a fundamental issue. The ultimate fate of Medrek indeed could not be different from the preceding similar organizations. The parties that bogusly claimed to have a multinational institutional base (such as, the Unity for Justice and Democracy – UJD) started ridiculing those organized across respective ethnic/national lines (such as, Oromo, Sidama and Somali) to denounce their political bases and adopt a pseudo-multinational representation. UJD and its counterparts attempted to learn from their preceding similar organizations and tried to comprise of some elites from Oromo and other nations, such as Negaso Gidada (PHD) and others. The final fate of Medrek is, however, what Obbo Bulcha Demeksa recently disclosed to the media. “UDJ’s political objective made Medrek fragile. The UDJ’s consider themselves as the only capable organization to lead the country. They undermine political parties organized across ethnic/national lines while they themselves are predominantly promoting the interests of Amhara,” he told a reporter from the Voice of America (VOA). This is a trajectory that led many political forces to vanish without serving the intended purpose. We can mention similar experiences from Diaspora, such as UEDF and AFD. Though the influences of the ruling party, EPRDF/TPLF, on the fragility and disintegration of political coalitions – take lions share, the Menelikian’s bogus political objectives have significantly contributed for the disintegration and fragility of such organized political alternatives. Such actions were most of the time pursued in covert aspect to garner supporters from various ethnic/national groups.

What Forced Menelikian to Pursue Overt Actions?
Recently, we are observing a shift in the Menelikian political block – in which they are openly pursuing the political campaign that promotes the tyrannical old empire. The move is a rapture which has got threats and opportunities, for me. In my opinion, the major cause that has forced Menelikians to pursue the open strategy (contrary to their past) is the level of awareness and conscious attained by peoples and nations. The understanding of the peoples on the formation, consequences and future prospects of the Ethiopian polity has significantly increased during the past decades. Particularly, the Oromo people, as a major nation representing the largest ethnic group in the country, have come through a series of political developments – in terms awareness and organization – which have appeared as threats to the Menelikian Ethiopia, which still pursues the imperial nation-building project of one-nation (Abyssinia), one-language (Amharic) and one-culture (Habesha), and so on. As I have argued in my previous article (Unmasking the Pseudo “Multinational-ism” in the Era of Social Media), in the past decades, the Amhara elites – who have preferred to promote the Menelik-type of political system under the cover of multinationalism, have faced political bankruptcy while the oppressed peoples have relatively gained by reviving their lost identities. The current shift by the Menelikians to an open action to blatantly promote the despotic regime of Menelik should indeed be the final response to such achievements of the targeted peoples. I hope the Menelikians shall fully unmask their political objectives through fully abandoning the pseudo-multinationalism claim and organize themselves across their real national pictures (if they want their own nation to keep abreast of the existing trend).

Holy War – In the Name of Unity and Love
The “holy war” campaign of the Menelikians – which is being currently conducted in an organized way – will hopefully be the final effort of this camp in the political history of the Ethiopian polity. It has been witnessed that the camp is using media outlets and celebrities, such as Teddy Afro and others, to accomplish its mission. Both the targeted media outlets and Teddy Afro are not new instruments of the camp. These are the instruments that have been bitterly worked to reverse the relative achievements of the targeted peoples on one side, and garner all efforts of the “united” (i.e. pseudo-multinational forces) together, on the other hand. Teddy Afro was keen in praising Ethiopian despotic kings and had boldly worked to contribute for the political purposes of the Menelikians, in manners that have attracted the interests of the targeted groups, particularly the youth. He was also instrumental during the 2005 election to forge strong unity between pseudo-multinational parties, which were organized to restore the tyrannical imperial regime based on one-language, one-culture and one-history. His music album, titled “Yasteserial,” was just released at the start of the political debates ahead of the 2005 election to influence the system in favor of those advocating for one-language, one-culture and one-history. In his recent music album, titled “Tikur Sew,” he also openly praised Menelik II and Menelik’s counterparts. This same artist did not have the courage to use his talent to promote a system of justice, equality and democracy – which is more relevant and important to present days. Finally, Teddy Afro expressed his deep love-affair with past despotic kings by declaring Menelik’s brutal actions as “holy war.” In collaboration with like minds, he was ready for a campaign to promote the despotic political motive in the name of unity and love – well, until #BoycottBedele nipped his promotion of tyrannical kings and their brutal actions in the bud.

The irony is that – the Menelikians and their instruments are promoting a despotic and brutal system in a provocative approach, which may influence the actions of the peoples who belong to the targeted nations. Most of the promoters of Menelik’s brutal actions know naturally that, their actions will neither be entertained by the targeted peoples nor serve as a mutual agenda to pursue real multinational interests. The consequence of such a campaign may not be easy as they have originally thought. The more they promote the past despotic regimes, the more grievances, mistrust and aggressiveness it will establish among peoples and organizations. This is why those collaborators, sponsors and promoters of such despotic political motives should stop and rethink about the consequences of their actions. As matter of fact, the continued promotion of Menelik-type system shall never bring the intended objective, but to the contrary, it will complete the trajectory that leads to freedom and justice for nations and peoples in more autonomous and self determined framework. One can easily understand this reality by monitoring the level of social-media-based counter-actions of Oromo elites to the Menelikian actions.

Menelikian’s Revised Strategy as an Opportunity for Nations
As I have explained above, the pseudo-multinational strategy pursed by Amhara elites have been destructive in the entire history of organized political frameworks to ensure sustainable democracy, justice and equality. Thus, the revised strategy of the block – i.e. the open promotion of the tyrannical imperial system, has unmasked the pseudo-multinationality claims by Amhara elites. The revised strategy of Menelikians is, thus, useful – not as such for the block itself – but for other forces that aspire for freedom, justice and equality of their respective peoples. It is also helpful to rethink viable and functional framework based on clear objectives – without committing similar mistakes, which lead to disintegration and fragility.

Conclusion
The current despotic political choice of the Menelikian block has emerged as the final response to the ever-increasing awareness of the oppressed peoples towards the realization of self-determined, free and democratic nations. By openly praising the Menelik-type authoritarian and imperial political objective, the block has clearly shown its historical antagonistic position to interests of most of the peoples targeted by Menelik’s brutal actions. In doing so, the block has unmasked itself of its pseudo-multinational representation claim – which has been one of the causes for fragility and disintegration of political alternatives. This indeed provides an opportunity for genuine political actors to rethink viable frameworks based on clear objectives to ensure the intended results. For the Menelikians, however, it will be more helpful if they completely unmask themselves of their pseudo-multinational objective and opt for an institution that represents their real aspiration, i.e. an Amhara-based political organization. The open campaign that promotes Menelik II’s brutal actions as holy war shall mark the final demise of the block, but such a motive will lead to disastrous consequences. That is why all bodies that are currently sponsoring and promoting Menelik II’s brutal actions should stop and rethink before actual intervention.

The Marks of Aannolee, Azulee and Chalanqoo/Calanqoo Cannot be Erased from the Memory of Oromo Generations

The marks of Aannolee, Azulee and Chalanqoo cannot be erased from the memory of successive Oromo generations and from the history of the Oromo people. These marks are incorporated into our collective memory. For this, centuries may pass, generations may come and go, but the crimes of Abyssinia – the mutilation of breasts of women and girls, and of the right hands of men and boys at Aannolee, and the mass massacres at Azulee and Chalanqoo will not be erased – will never be diminished, and never be forgotten.

Menelik II’s mutilation of breasts of women and girls, and of hands of men and boys is the first one in warfare throughout written history – from antiquity to modern times, unless proven to the contrary. Those who support Menelik’s genocide at Aannolee, Azulee & Calanqoo as a “holy war” or as a war of “reunification of Ethiopia” should hold full entitlement to it.

During the campaign of colonization of the south in the late nineteenth-century, king Menelik II of Abyssinia exterminated the Oromo population by 50%, Kaficho by 75%, Gimira by 80% and Madii by over 90% (according to Radio Simbirtuu’s interview with Prof. Mekuria Bulcha, 19 December 2013, Part 2). These are genocides of highest proportions. The basic argument of the Abyssinian genocide deniers has, however, remained the same as always: “it never happened; the term ‘genocide’ does not apply; it is a ‘reunification of Ethiopia’.” Recently, the tactics of the deniers of Menelik II’s genocide has been shifted from “reunification of Ethiopia” to “holy war.”

Abyssinians always avoid public discourse of the genocide at Aannolee, Azulee and Chalanqoo – believing that sooner or later, in the course of time, that generation would pass from the scene, and their children would become acculturated and assimilated in the Abyssinian way of life and Abyssinian political thought, and then the issue of genocide dies out and will be forgotten. However, what the Abyssinians forgot or failed to understand – is that the genocide at Aannolee, Azulee and Chalanqoo shapes not only the outlook of the immediate victims of the generation of the time, but also of subsequent generations of the future. It is very important for the descendants of the perpetrators, i.e. the deniers of the genocide on Oromo – to engage introspection to face and learn from their own history. It is time for the Nafxanyaas – the deniers of genocide to ask themselves a question as to how that gross mass genocide could have occurred, instead of denying it and trying to maintain a false righteous self-image.

The Abyssinians are unable or unwilling to deal with the truth. They have always refused to recognize the crimes committed against the peoples of the south, Oromo included, as genocide. Instead, they elevated it to the level of a “holy war/qidus xorrinnat,” then took pride in it – identified with it; enthusiastically embraced it; glorified and glamorized it. This campaign is in support of their political and religious elites, scholars, governments, institutions, and individuals – those who have been preaching the genocide committed against Oromos and the south as a “reunification of Ethiopia.”

The New and Present Genocide on Oromo, and Tigrayans’ Attempt to Deny It
Today, the Tigrayan regime is behind the discussion of the past genocide to divert attention from itself while it is committing genocide itself more dangerous than that of the past ones. It has undertaken open and total war campaign against the Oromo people. It is vitally important, therefore, that we should focus our attention on current genocide the Tigrayan regime is committing while, at the same time, reminding ourselves of the genocide that the Amhara regime of Menelik II committed a century ago. The Amharas have been denying the genocide against the Oromo and other southern peoples that their regime of Menelik II committed, and now the Tigrayans are also denying the genocide that their regime is committing.

The Amharas are simply dancing and singing to the ghost of Menelik II, but they do not possess the means and capabilities to commit anther genocide. Today, it is the Tigrayan regime led by TPLF that is committing genocidal mass murders against the Oromo people; it is this regime that possesses the means and capabilities to commit genocide. Its means are the army, paramilitary unit, the police force, the special police or Liyyuu police, secret state agents, death squads, the bureaucratic and judicial systems. All of these are already fully utilized for this purpose.

The sudden descend of the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) upon Oromiyaa in 1991 set in a rapid motion a process to eliminate any opposition to its rule that culminate in the arrests, tortures and killings. Then, since 1992, it has been carrying out systematic, methodical, pre-planned, and centrally-organized genocidal mass murders against the Oromo people. Meles Zenawi was the notorious architect and organizer of the policy of the genocide on Oromo with his culprits and other thousands of perpetrators of genocide – who are still implementing his policy after his death. His brutality against the Oromo people has surpassed that of all his predecessors combined. His regime has erected concentration camps across Oromiyaa; camps, such as Hursoo, Bilaattee, Dhidheessaa, Zuwaay, and Qalittii, are the well known ones. But, numerous other clandestine prison cells, where the victims are eliminated, have been established across the empire. The regime has openly undertaken a major Oromiyaa-wide persecutions of Oromos. Hence, ordinary people, for the first time, being rounded up and sent to these clandestine centers for interrogations through torture. In the torture, few survived and many perished.

The pattern of destruction has been repeated over and over in different parts of Oromiyaa. Many of these repetitive destruction are far from the major cities; such repetition are a centrally design one. Further, a reward structure is set in place. That reward is geared towards those who implement the policy. The regional governors and officials, who refuses to carry out orders to annihilate the Oromo, are summarily replaced as disloyal and OLF agents. Community leaders are arrested and persecuted. Many women, children, and elderly run into forests and deserts to escape slaughters. Today, the Oromo people are in violent historical moment. They are the target of the Tigrayan regime for physical exterminations and forcible removal from their lands. Hundreds of thousands have been killed; millions have been forced out from their lands; and their lands haven been sold or leased to local and multinational land-grabbers.

The Tigrayan regime has fully undertaken the implementation of the policy of Oromo exterminations since 1992. The Amhara genocidal deniers are fully subscribed to this policy. In the Tigrayan regime’s jails, millions of Oromos perished as the result of starvation, diseases, the harsh environments, and physical exterminations.

We are the nation of heroes, heroines and victims. We were the victims of genocide yesterday, and we are the victims of genocide today. Yesterday, we were victims of genocide under Amhara successive regimes, and today, we are victims of genocide under the Tigrayan regime. Indeed, we are a wounded and bled nation in our country by another nation – the Abyssinian nation.

We oftentimes say, never again to genocide in Oromiyaa. We say, the seeds of Aannolee, Azulee and Chalanqoo must not be allowed to sprout again in Oromiyaa. And yet, it has already sprouted; violence is again around us; violence of genocide is still consuming our people. Menelik’s genocide at Aannolee, Azulee and Chalanqoo is reconstructed and renewed by Meles Zenawi, and implemented Oromiyaa wide. Hence, the past genocide has now become the present new genocide. Hence, the dead Oromo are still dead; more are still dying; expropriated Oromoland is still expropriated; the pillaging of Oromiyaa is at its height, and the colonized Oromiyaa is still colonized.

The Way Forward
The way forward is Oromo nationalists’ unity and the fight against occupation. For this, it is important to rebuild the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) as a superior mighty force, both in quantity and quality, to protect the population and secure liberation. This enables the nation to drive out the Tigrayan regime and establish the independent Democratic Republic of Oromiyaa. Again, it is vitally important to remove Menelik’s statue from Oromiyaa, and establish the National Memorial Day of the Genocide on Oromo for the victims of Aannolee, Azulee and Chalanqoo. This National Memorial Day of the Genocide on Oromo should be established and observed annually while we are still fighting for independence. The date and the month must be different from the Oromo Martyrs’ Day/Guyyaa Gootoota Oromoo.

No one escapes from the history of one’s people. For this, we should and must not allow the past to rest and to be forgotten. Every generation must teach the succeeding generation about the past history, their heroes and heroines. The past, the present as well as the future belong to the succeeding generations. Each new generation hold the entitlement of the past and the present. For this, the establishment of the National Memorial Day of the Genocide on Oromo is the order of the day that the marks of Aannolee, Azulee and Chalanqoo cannot be erased from the memory of successive Oromo generations.

The Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) has launched the Oromo Youth League (OYL) on the 25th of January, 2014. The League is expected to organize and mobilize the youth in Oromian Zones to peacefully and lawfully struggle for a democratic system that respects the social, economic, and political rights of the Oromo people in Ethiopia. Out of 18 zones in Oromia, 12 zones sent their representatives, who, in turn, elected the 11 members of OYL’s Executive Committee in the presence of the Chairman of the OFC, Merera Gudina (Phd.), and the Secretary, Obbo Bekele Nega. The members of the OYL’s Executive Committee hail from the following Oromian zones: North Shawaa, West Shawaa, Illuu Abbaa Booraa, Qalam Wallagaa, East Wallagaa, Gujii, West Wallagaa, Finfinnee, and East Arsii.

No Amount of Doctors’ Training Can Change the Equation, but a Just System that Motivates and Continues to Inspire the Educated to Serve, and Serve Again!

The following piece is in response to an article published on Ayyaantuu.com about the brain-drain of physicians and other skilled professionals from Ethiopia and other parts of Africa to Canada and other western countries. This is not a new story to many people. What is rather new to some of us is the Ethiopian government’s strategy to deal with this tragedy by over producing physicians.

I read this story a day after I called a 36-year school director, who ended up in a hospital, 100km away from his home town only because he had a headache and was found to have high blood-pressure, and given some medicine to control it. Actually, he lives in a town where there is a district hospital. I spoke with the same person 2 days before, and to my best knowledge, he was in good state of health. When I called to speak with him again, his phone was answered by his wife, who told me that he was receiving an urgent care in a hospital. I asked to speak with him, asked him how he felt and what medicine he was given. His blood-pressure, at the time I spoke with him, was not elevated. I realized that the unfortunate teacher was suffering not from hypertensive emergency, but the side effects of the wrong blood-pressure medication, about which neither the patient nor the health professional had any idea that it could be causing his symptoms. His wife initially told me that they were planning to take him to a higher-level immediately if he had not felt better. He had been given two medicines, which he continued to use them thinking that his blood-pressure was getting out of control and causing his profound dizziness. You can imagine the financial impact of such poor quality of care. It could cost this teacher thousands of Birr/dollars until he gets to a tertiary care level or a dedicated physician who reviews his medication, listens to his story well and tells him to stop taking the wrong medicine he had been put on. This is the story of thousands of people – if not every day, every week, in a country where the government’s policy is to deal with the massive exodus of physicians by overproducing physicians and saturating the domestic market.

They have no strategy of retaining the best of the best, but have strategies to use the worst of the worst from all communities of people to rule over them indefinitely. To get back to the main reason why I decided to write this short piece: reflecting on my own trajectory from a “committed subject” willing to serve his country to someone soon-to-be-a-professional selling his service for a fee in a western country.

“According to Canada-based CUSO International, between 1990 and 2006, Ethiopia trained 3,700 doctors. Only 700 of them stayed to work there. Africa’s health-care system isn’t the only sector hemorrhaging skilled workers — there are more African-born engineers and scientists living in Canada and the U.S. than in all of Africa.”

Reading this story on Ayyaantuu.com made me think about circumstances that forced me to leave my country for a time being. Fresh out of a medical school, I went to the Oromiya Health Bureau and asked the Head to assign me to the Borana zone, which was, back then, one of the few zones physicians avoided going to at any cost. There was tremendous violence, even against physicians, and the economic deprivation of the local communities was unparalleled anywhere in Ethiopia, except Ogaden and parts of Hararge. Borana was occupied by thousands of TPLF soldiers stationed in almost all towns and major checkpoints and camps. Nobody wanted to go to Borana unless they had no other options – that was the situation 13 years ago.

Per my request, I was assigned to Borana, and I went there with a letter and asked the Head of the Zonal Health Department, Dr. Assefa Sime, to assign me to the most disadvantaged Health Center (HC) so that I could serve the poorest of the poor, and the most marginalized and difficult to reach population of the zone.

Here are some of the facts; Borana was the most liked place by physicians before the fall of Derg regime (because of lucrative contraband business, and the good financial status of the Borana and a grateful community), and it became the most unpopular few years later after the coming to power of the current regime. Moyale was a thriving business town which even attracted the sister of a Prime Minister to invest in a hotel industry. Years later, it became a military garrison – home to thousands of TPLF soldiers watching, at times, arming local communities to destroy each other. A few years before I came to Borana, there were 13 physicians in the Nagelle Borana Hospital (NBH), and 2-3 physicians in almost all Health Centers (HC). When I came there in 2000, there were only 3 general practitioners (GP’s) and 1 surgeon in NBH. They all had left in a matter of few years. There was a similar trend in almost all zones of Oromiya. There were more doctors in the capital, Addis Ababa (Finfinne), than in the rest of the country. Oromiya’s health facilities were to be “ghost places.”

The zonal health administration told me that they could not assign a doctor to HC when the zonal hospitals were almost empty. There were only 3 physicians in the brand new Bule Hora Hospital. Each of these hospitals were serving more than 1.5-million population at the time. As a result, I was assigned to work in the Nagelle Borana Hospital. A few months later, I had to go to the Taltalle District to supervise the National Polio Eradication Campaign.

Taltalle is a 10,000-sqkm wide district – its size is bigger than the North Shawa zone of Oromiya. We had only one car to conduct supervision, which lasted only for a few days in this big district. A certain European expatriate working for an international NGO (non-governmental organization) – who worked in Kosovo before coming to work in Taltalle – told me that Taltalle was actually bigger than Kosovo. There was no vehicle assigned to the HC, and there was no district health office. El-Dima, a police post at the Ethio-Kenya border during the Haile Selassie regime, is 105km from Millami, the main town. I had to travel to El-Dima from Millami on foot, back and forth – fresh out of high school. That was how teachers and health care workers used to travel to reach several communities in the Taltalle district. It was a difficult campaign to supervise.

Once I was there, I decided to go to Waata Wondo, a place no physician had ever set their feet on. It is only 60km from Millami. However, because of lack of road infrastructure, we had to take the longest route, through Birindar. Konso, across the Weyto River and the desert to reach Waata Wondo from the back. We had to take a better route – better is a relative term. Look at the picture below if you want to know how good that road had been.

However, getting there was similar to making a spiritual journey. I lack words to express the feelings afterwards. The pride of being there, taking all the risks and personal hardships. It is, after all, a service to my country and my people. Being there for my people, against all odds and challenges! That is what I ask all physicians in training back home to consider. Graduate, be bold, and go to even the most disadvantaged and hard to reach areas, serve! You will be proud of your service to your country at the prime of your life. Always think about staying and working, and of course, cooperating with others in changing the political system to a system which is based on the best interests of all its peoples. Our vision to have a government of the people, by the people is probably the panacea. No amount of doctors’ training can change the equation, but a just system that motivates and continues to inspire the educated to serve, and serve again!

Why is it that only Amhara elites denounce Ethiopia’s ethnic federalism?

There is an ongoing coordinated attack on the right of nations and nationalities to self-determination in Ethiopia. This campaign is led exclusively by the Amhara elite with the aim of creating delusions among the general public.

They deceptively attribute the failure and brutalities of EPRDF, Ethiopia’s ruling party, to its policy of ethnic federalism. Ethiopia adopted federal government arrangement in early 1990s on an ethno-linguistic basis in an effort to decentralize the Amhara-dominated highly centralized structures of imperial Ethiopia.

By attributing the failure of the ruling regime to ethnic federalism, the Amhara elites want to score two goals: to take back the Menelik palace and demolish self-determination of nations granted by the 1994 constitution, at least in theory. They curtly refer to this arrangement as tribal politics (ye-gosa poletika) and a linguistic based division (be kuankua kefafelun).

Unpacking Amhara’s self-denial and the Ethiopian identity

(OPride) – Identity has always been at the core of human socio-political evolution. The institution of slavery was based on identity. Imperialism took place at the expense of different identities. Today, democratic governments around the world struggle to address questions of identity.

Despite this fact, some elites deny the relevance of identity as a strong force for political organizing. For example, in the former Soviet Union, identity was treated as a primordial human nature – a false consciousnesses that ought to be settled through the elimination of classes. But the end of Cold War and the rise of national independence movements disproved communism’s disdain for identity politics.
